Decanter 94/100

Clos La Madeleine own just 2.3ha, but they've made it count in 2018. It's the second vintage that this estate has been owned by the Moueix family, but is bottled separately from Belair Monange - its sibling estate located right next door. And it certainly makes the most of its freedom, delivering beautifully well-defined fruits bouncing against limestone minerality, with firm tannins and beautiful grip. It's a pretty serious wine with good personality, impact and persistency. Drinking Window 2026 - 2040

James Suckling 93-94

A tight and focused red with dark-berry, chocolate and hazelnut character. Medium to full body. Racy finish.

Jancis Robinson 16.5/20

76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc planted on clay on limestone. Barrel sample. Deepest crimson. Ripe raspberry and mulberry fruit, intense and aromatic and smells a little brighter than La Serre, just tasted, less immediate oak. But the oak is more obvious on the palate, in sweet chocolate texture and flavour, the tannins ripe and rounded yet there is immense generosity to the fruit. Polished, though the oak is a little dominant at the moment. (JH) Drink 2025-2032

Glengarry Review

76% Merlot, 24% Cabernet France Franc. A tiny 2.3ha vineyard that is clay on limestone. This is a savoury Merlot dominated wine with great acidity. The combination giving this wine super impressive structure. It’s got great fruit and depth of flavour together with richness. A wine of impressive class, one for the cellar.

Parker 92-94+

Lisa Perrotti-Brown. A blend of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc, the medium garnet-purple colored 2018 Clos la Madeleine starts off just a little broody, soon giving way to very pretty scents of tilled soil, rose hip tea and fallen leaves over a core of warm redcurrants, chocolate-covered cherries and baked plums plus a hint of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate possesses loads of zip with vivacious red and black fruits and a racy line of freshness backed up by a chewy texture, finishing long and earthy. Not sure what the price is, but I’m imagining there’s a lot of bang for your buck here!
